LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Two levels of leadership workshops will be offered. Leadership A, for women new to leadership, will explore the definition of leadership and the barriers women face in becoming leaders. Each participant will develop an assessment of her leadership skills, identify some personal leadership goals and learn tools to meet those goals. Leadership B, for those who have attended Leadership A or are more experienced leaders, will focus on applying strategic thinking to planning a campaign. How do we organize politically in our unions and communities? Each participant will identify and build on her strengths as we develop a strategic campaign.

SKILLS WORKSHOPS

Standing Up for Our Issues and Ourselves Participants will identify the problems and barriers we face as individuals and groups when challenging leadership that doesn’t address our interests and concerns. We will then develop individual assertiveness skills to use to build individual and collective efforts for change.

Building Strength through Events & Actions How can we use events or actions to build the strength of our unions and organizations and increase member involvement? How do we plan and mobilize? This workshop will take us through the steps to plan a successful member involved event or action.

Steward’s Training: Steward as Organizer Learn the skills to be an effective steward: how to get others involved, win grievances, enforce your contract and resolve problems.

Collective Bargaining: Winning Good Contracts in Challenging Times Learn the how-to’s of developing a bargaining campaign, defining and analyzing issues, building a contract action team & bargaining in today’s changing workplaces.

Tackling Health & Safety Are you or co-workers getting injured on the job or is your worksite making you sick? Does your union need to be pushed to take up health & safety issues? Build leadership skills through learning to organize around workers’ rights to health & safety.

Talking Politics & the Economy (BILINGUAL - English and Spanish) With an eye to the Nov. 2008 elections, we’ll take a look at some of the major economic and political policies that impact us as working women. We will discuss some possible solutions and how to engage our members in support of our issues.
